Description

Want the Golden Circle, but with something truly different added in? This combo day tour lets you experience Iceland above ground and underground, pairing the classic Golden Circle sights with an easy, guided walk inside the Lava Tunnel at Raufarhólshellir.

Start underground: The Lava Tunnel (Raufarhólshellir)

Begin the day by stepping into the path of lava that once flowed from an ancient eruption. Raufarhólshellir is one of Iceland’s largest lava tunnels, reaching up to 30 meters wide and around 10 meters high in places. Near the entrance, a collapsed section in the ceiling creates dramatic columns of light, revealing rich mineral colors along the tunnel walls.

Your expert guide provides a helmet and flashlight, gives a short safety briefing, and then leads you through this otherworldly landscape. No caving experience is needed, the pace is comfortable, and the route is designed to be accessible for first-timers. Movie fans may also recognize the tunnel from scenes filmed for the Hollywood movie Noah.

Then the Golden Circle: Iceland’s greatest hits in one day

After the lava tunnel adventure, you’ll head out on the famous Golden Circle route, visiting three of Iceland’s most iconic natural wonders:

Þingvellir National Park

Walk through one of Iceland’s most important historical landscapes and see the rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Þingvellir is both a geological landmark and the birthplace of Iceland’s parliament traditions, which makes the visit feel meaningful in more ways than one.

Geysir Geothermal Area

Next, feel the ground steam and bubble in the Geysir geothermal region. The star here is Strokkur, which erupts regularly and sends hot water high into the air. It’s one of those stops where nature does the show on schedule, again and again.

Gullfoss Waterfall

Finish the sightseeing loop at mighty Gullfoss, where enormous volumes of glacial water crash into a rugged canyon below. The viewing areas give you different angles, from panoramic overlooks to closer viewpoints where you can feel the mist on your face.

This is an easy tour that blends nature, culture, and geology into one well-paced day, perfect if you want the essentials of the Golden Circle plus a memorable underground experience you will still be talking about afterwards.
