The Elfin Tour – Horse Riding with Icelandic Folklore
Feel free to contact us
Description
Elves are important creatures in Icelandic folklore and are believed to influence where roads are built and how the land is shaped. On this tour, we explore areas traditionally connected to these hidden beings while enjoying relaxed and scenic horse riding in the countryside.
After getting to know the horses, we ride along good trails through meadows and lava fields surrounding the Eldhestar farm at Vellir. Depending on the route chosen, we pass the small cleft Álfakví and the old sheep house that cannot be removed without serious consequences, according to local legend.
We also ride towards Skjóklettur, believed to be the elves’ church where singing has been heard, and continue towards the elfin hill Einbúi, said to be inhabited by friendly and sometimes singing elves. Along the way, we experience excellent riding paths for enjoying the smooth and comfortable tölt of the Icelandic horse.
Alternatively, the route may take us through hummocky meadows and lava fields where elves are believed to live. When crossing the small warm river Varmá, keep an eye out for Nykur, the Icelandic water spirit. After returning to the farm, a light lunch is served at Hotel Eldhestar.
This tour is suitable for riders of all experience levels. Beginners and experienced riders ride together, and the pace is adjusted to the group. We focus on tölt whenever possible but do not gallop for safety reasons.
