Weather in September
Even though summer is over, September is still a very appealing month to visit Iceland. The weather is often calmer than many travelers expect, the landscapes begin to glow with autumn colours, and the country feels less busy than during the peak summer season. The average temperature is around 7.4°C (45.3°F), though milder days can still reach 10 to 15°C (50 to 59°F).
The average precipitation in September is around 67 mm, and there is still good daylight through the day, although evenings begin getting darker again. Average sunshine is around 125 hours, which makes September a lovely month for sightseeing, scenic drives, and longer outdoor days without the intensity of midsummer brightness.
One of the best things about September is the return of the Northern Lights. Early autumn is when the season starts becoming exciting again, especially later in the month when nights grow darker.
September is also not as crowded as the main summer months, which makes it a great time to visit popular places with a little more breathing room.

Driving in Iceland in September
September is usually a very good month to rent a car in Iceland. Summer is ending, but roads are often still open and travel conditions are generally easier than later in autumn or winter. It is still smart to stay flexible, because Icelandic weather can always change quickly and rain, wind, and colder spells can arrive with little warning.
If you are thinking about renting a car, a 4WD is still a smart option, especially if you plan to travel beyond the most common routes or visit more remote parts of the country. Off-road driving is strictly forbidden in Iceland, and it is always important to stay on marked roads and tracks.
In September, most roads are still accessible, although some routes in more remote areas may begin closing later in the season, and mountain roads can be more uncertain depending on conditions. The main roads are generally well maintained, and the most popular regions around Reykjavík are accessible, including the Golden Circle, the South Coast, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and much of North Iceland. In many years it is still possible to drive the full circle around Iceland in September.
If you are not comfortable driving yourself, many bus tours and private tours are also available during September.

What to wear
September is when Iceland starts feeling cooler again, especially in the evenings and on windier days. The average temperature in the autumn months is lower than in summer, but September is often milder than October and November. It is a comfortable month for travel if you pack the right layers.
We recommend bringing warm clothes and being ready for a mix of conditions. September weather can still shift between sunshine, rain, and wind during the same trip. Layers are the key, so you can stay comfortable when the day begins cool, warms up slightly, and then turns colder again in the evening.
- Hiking boots - If you are planning on only staying in Reykjavík then sneakers might be enough but if you will be travelling around the country and staying outside you need good hiking shoes that will keep you warm.
- Base layer - Warm layers under your clothes might be the best thing you bring to Iceland. We recommend wearing long wool or thermal underwear, and you can buy it in outdoor clothing stores in Iceland.
- Fleece or wool - A fleece jacket or Icelandic wool sweater is ideal as a warm middle layer.
- Parka or water and windproof jacket - Usually you do not need a heavy parka in September, but a waterproof and windproof jacket over a fleece or wool layer is essential.
- Water and windproof pants - Very useful for rainy days, windy viewpoints, and longer outdoor stops.
- Hats, gloves and warm socks - Bring at least one lighter set and one thicker set if you plan longer days outside.
- Swimsuit - You are going to want to relax in our warm swimming pools or hot springs after a long day outside.
