Weather in October
October is one of the wettest month of the year in Iceland (average precipitation is 86mm), but despite that it is for many, especially photographers, one of the most beautiful month.
October is one of the most atmospheric months to visit Iceland. The weather is cooler, the days are shorter, and the landscape often glows with rich autumn colours that make the country especially beautiful for photography and scenic travel. Even though October is one of the wetter months of the year, many travelers love it for the combination of moody light, quieter roads, and the return of darker evenings.
The average temperature in October is around 4.4°C (39.9°F), and average sunshine drops to around 83 hours. Rain is common, and conditions can change quickly, but that also means dramatic skies, beautiful contrasts in the landscape, and stronger chances of seeing the Northern Lights again as the nights grow longer.
For many visitors, October hits a very appealing balance between autumn scenery, fewer crowds, and the first real feel of the winter season ahead.

Driving in Iceland in October
Driving in Iceland in October can still be very rewarding, but conditions are less predictable than in summer. Rain, strong wind, colder temperatures, and the first more wintry spells of the season can all affect the roads, especially outside the southwest and in higher or more remote areas.
It is important to always check road and weather conditions before setting out. In October, mountain roads are closed, and some routes in more remote parts of the country may become less reliable depending on conditions. Main roads around Reykjavík and many of the most popular sightseeing regions are usually accessible, including the Golden Circle, the South Coast, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and much of the southwest.
If you are planning to rent a car in October, a 4WD is a sensible option, especially if you want more flexibility and expect to travel beyond the most common routes. It is also smart to allow extra time, stay flexible with your itinerary, and avoid pushing ahead if conditions become poor.
If you are not comfortable driving in autumn and early winter conditions, many bus tours and private tours are also available during October.

What to wear
October in Iceland is cool enough that packing properly makes a big difference. The weather can shift quickly between rain, sunshine, wind, and colder spells, so the smartest approach is to dress in warm, practical layers and be ready for changing conditions through the day.
We recommend bringing clothes for all kinds of weather, especially reliable outerwear and good shoes. Even when the day begins mild, it can feel much colder later in the afternoon or evening, particularly in windy places and open landscapes.
- Hiking boots - If you are planning on only staying in Reykjavík then sneakers might be enough but if you will be travelling around the country and staying outside you need good hiking shoes that will keep you warm.
- Base layer - Warm layers under your clothes might be the best thing you bring to Iceland. We recommend wearing long wool or thermal underwear, and you can buy it in outdoor clothing stores in Iceland.
- Fleece or wool - A fleece jacket or Icelandic wool sweater is an excellent middle layer in October.
- Parka or water and windproof jacket - A warm outer layer is very useful in October, especially when the weather turns colder, wetter, or windier.
- Water and windproof pants - These are very useful for rainy days, waterfalls, and longer outdoor stops.
- Hats, gloves and warm socks - Bring at least one lighter set and one thicker set if you plan to be outdoors a lot.
- Swimsuit - You are going to want to relax in our warm swimming pools or hot springs after a long day outside.
