Weather in December
December is the darkest month of the year in Iceland, but it is also one of the most atmospheric. Homes, streets, and public spaces begin glowing with Christmas lights and decorations, and that festive warmth gives the whole season a special character. For many visitors, December in Iceland feels less like “just winter” and more like a blend of snowy scenery, cosy evenings, and a real sense of seasonal magic.
Average sunshine is only around 12 hours in total through the month, which means daylight is very limited, especially in the second half of December. At the same time, those long dark evenings make December one of the most appealing months for seeing the Northern Lights. December is also cold, with an average temperature of around -0.2°C (31.6°F) and average precipitation of 79 mm. You should be ready for changing winter conditions, including snow, wind, sun, and occasional heavier snowfall. Reykjavík often gets less snow than some other parts of the country, while North Iceland and the Westfjords usually feel more fully wintry.

Driving in Iceland in December
Driving in Iceland in December can be rewarding, but it requires planning and flexibility. Ice, snow, wind, and very short daylight hours all affect travel, especially outside Reykjavík and the main sightseeing routes. Winter conditions can change quickly, so every longer drive should begin with a fresh check of road and weather updates.
In December, mountain roads are closed, and some routes in more remote parts of the country may be difficult or unavailable depending on conditions. Main roads around Reykjavík and many of the best-known visitor routes are usually maintained, including the Golden Circle, the South Coast, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and much of the southwest.
If you plan to rent a car in December, a 4WD with proper winter tires is the sensible option, especially if you want more flexibility beyond the capital region. It is also smart to allow extra time, keep plans adaptable, and avoid trying to force a schedule if the forecast changes.
If you are not comfortable driving in winter conditions, many bus tours and private tours are also available during December.

What to wear
December is one of the months where packing well has a huge effect on how comfortable your trip feels. Temperatures are low, weather can change quickly, and wind can make conditions feel colder than the thermometer suggests. The best approach is to dress in warm layers and plan for a mix of snow, wet weather, and clear winter evenings.
Warm base layers, a proper outer layer, and sturdy shoes are essentials. Even if you spend part of your time in Reykjavík, you will likely want clothing that works for winter sightseeing, short outdoor stops, and evening activities.
- Hiking boots - If you are planning on only staying in Reykjavík then sneakers might be enough but if you will be travelling around the country and staying outside you need good hiking shoes that will keep you warm.
- Base layer - Warm layers under the clothes might be the best thing you bring to Iceland. We recommend wearing long wool or thermal underwear, and you can buy it in outdoor clothing stores in Iceland.
- Fleece or wool - A fleece jacket or Icelandic wool sweater is an excellent middle layer in December.
- Parka or water and windproof jacket - A warm outer layer is essential in December, especially when the weather turns colder, wetter, or windier.
- Water and windproof pants - These are very useful for snowy days, wet ground, and longer outdoor stops.
- Hats, gloves and warm socks - Bring at least one lighter set and one thicker set if you plan to spend a lot of time outside.
- Swimsuit - You are going to want to relax in our warm swimming pools or hot springs after a long day outside.
